Texas Certified Retirement Communities

Looking for a great place to retire? Several communities within the state of Texas have earned the designation of "certified retirement community" (CRC)  by the state's Department of Agriculture. These towns have gone to special efforts to reach out to retirees, for the purpose of encouraging them to consider Texas as a retirement destination of choice.

The idea behind the CRC program is to promote certain Texas communities as retirement living options for residents of the state as well as those looking for a new place to live during their retirement years. The program focuses on developing communities attractive to retirees.

There are eight certified retirement communities in Texas, including:
Athens:  Located just 35 miles from Tyler and 75 miles outside of Dallas, Athens has the feel of a small town, yet provides easy access to the benefits of city life. This community offers a number of benefits that retirees will find very appealing, particularly those who enjoy fishing and boating. In addition to excellent opportunities for anglers to enjoy the great outdoors, retirees will enjoy hiking trails, additional outdoor activities, cultural events, and more.

Nacogdoches: The charm of old Texas comes to life in Nacogdoches, the state's oldest town. Those who enjoy 19th century architecture and the charm of the old west may find this community to be an ideal retirement destination. The town is home to Stephen F. Austin State University, so it has the appeal of a college town. There are also a number of outdoor venues, offering camping, fishing, skiing, and other enjoyable activities. Those who relocate the area to will enjoy quaint local dining establishments, antique stores, etc.

San Augustine: This charming Texas community is rich and history, and is a lovely spot for retirees to consider. San Augustine holds the distinction of being the first American settlement in the state of Texas. Fittingly the town is home to more than 50 recorded Texas Historical Landmark. Retirees often find the location's close proximity to the pristine waterways of the Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn Reservoirs to be very appealing.

Information about additional Texas certified retirement communities is available on the Texas Department of Agriculture's website.
